Der Opernfreund, one of the leading online magazines in the Opera world, has published its Tops and Flops of the 2023/2024 season, nominating Gabriele Mangione as “Best Debut 2024” for his performance of Calaf in Turandot at the Landestheater Detmold. 
 
The citation for the award say, “The young Italian tenor Gabriele Mangione performed Puccini's last great tenor role with confidence and apparent ease from his first appearance on stage, portraying a sophisticated character, full of colours and emotions.”
 
Mangione, performed the role under the musical direction of Per-Otto Johansson and the direction of Holger Potocki, in the version presented with Franco Alfano's “complete” finale. The Italian tenor will reprise the role at the Teater Vanemuine in Tartu, Estonia, under the direction of the theater's general music director Risto Joost and directed by Giorgio Madia (Oct. 11/13, 2024 - Feb. 14/16/23, 2025).
