A triumphant role debut in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca

Tenor George Vîrban has received enthusiastic acclaim from Romanian critics following his portrayal of Roméo in Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the Romanian National Opera in Cluj-Napoca, opening the new production by Arnaud Bernard. Across four reviews published by Adevărul, Radio România Muzical, Republika Kritica and Prietenii ONR Cluj, critics praised his vocal brilliance, expressive versatility and compelling stage presence, marking a significant milestone in the singer’s artistic journey.

Costin Popa, writing for Adevărul, described Vîrban’s performance as “a confirmation of his artistic calibre”, highlighting his “captivating lyricism”, “rich, full-bodied vocal timbre” and “secure high notes”. His review celebrated several of the opera’s most demanding passages, from the celebrated cavatina Ah! lève-toi, soleil! to the emotionally charged duets with Juliette, praising the tenor’s inspired phrasing and remarkable ability to convey the score’s emotional intensity.

Florica Jalbă of Radio România Muzical likewise welcomed the singer’s progress, describing his role debut as “very fine, both musically and dramatically”. She noted his considerable gains in the upper register, with resonant, secure high notes that reveal an increasingly heroic dimension to his full lyric tenor voice.

For Tudor-Costin Sicomaș of Republika Kritica, Vîrban’s interpretation stood out for its psychological depth and vocal richness. The critic praised the singer’s ability to trace Roméo’s transformation from youthful infatuation to impetuous passion, remorse and profound devotion, noting that his voice “enchanted me”. His partnership with soprano Diana Alexewas another highlight, with Sicomaș describing them as “an extraordinary couple”.

Diaconu Adrian, writing for Prietenii ONR Cluj, was equally enthusiastic, declaring that Vîrban “simply surpassed himself” in the role. The review highlighted his splendid lyric tenor, exceptionally beautiful vocal colours, evenness across the registers and secure high notes, alongside stage acting and physical presence particularly well suited to the character.

These accolades arrive as George Vîrban prepares to bring his portrayal of Roméo to the legendary Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, further extending the reach of an interpretation that has already made a strong impression on Romanian critics.

With this acclaimed portrayal of Gounod’s romantic hero, George Vîrban continues to demonstrate the artistic growth, vocal promise and expressive individuality that distinguish his career.
