Last March 29th, Julia Rutigliano made her role debut as Azucena, in the new production of Verdi’s Il Trovatore at the Stadtheater Gießen.
Rutigliano’s portrayal of this emblematic Verdi’s character has been highly acclaimed by the audience and the critics, that stated she deserves “a crown” for her music and theatrical creation.
We share with you three reviews about the premiere.
“The fabulous cast is complemented by the guest appearance in the house of Julia Rutigliano as Azucena. Her glowing mezzosoprano voice has a passionate, blazing high register as well as a sonorous depth. She is completely absorbed by the role, living and suffering through the emotional states of this tragic figure, from loving mother to maltreated prisoner. In terms of acting and music, she deserves the crown among the excellent cast.”
Michael Demel, Der Opernfreund
“As Azucena, mezzosoprano Julia Rutigliano impressively demonstrates her vocal and dramatic qualities. With her glowing voice, her intense, expressive performance gives credibility to a woman haunted by visions of horror and driven by a never-ending desire for revenge, projecting all her love onto her alleged son Manrico.”
Thomas Schmitz-Albohn, Gießener Anzeiger
“The mezzosoprano Julia Rutigliano sings Azucena. We would love to welcome her back to Gießen soon. The energy with which she sings Azucena is simply outstanding. Sometimes her identification in the role is so impressive that you think that she really is slightly mad.”
